| Chapter OneWhere am I?Word Count: 1,522 - Spoiler:
A world of green, completely devoid of any life. No humans, plants, animals – anything. Just me. What happened? Dexter was only supposed to send me a couple days into the future, what on Earth could have happened in just three days to make the world I knew this…desolate? An innocent giggle, a fierce snarl, and a great blast of light; that is all I remember. The air smells of corroded metals and decay, the ground soft and mushy under my boots, a squelchy, sucking sound coming from them every time I lift my foot. I’ve only been in this world (I dare not compare it to my own) for a few moments and already I begin to hate the color green. Not the lush, grass color I’m used to, but a sickly toxic waste so eerily bright I fear I’d go blind if I stare at it for too long.
A witch-like cackle echoes behind me sending a cold chill down my spine. With slow deliberate steps I turn around to face the creatures. The glowing blobs look similar to something you would find in the dark corners of Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, something that children with sick, twisted imaginations would come up with. Two little green orbs stand(sit?) before me, stupid looking grins plastered on their faces. Any other time I would have laughed, yet the malicious auras I feel coming off them in waves does little to comfort me, if not makes me take a step back.
I can feel the heat licking at the back of my calves; my commonsense should have kicked in but fear overrides all logic and reason. One of the neon blobs leap away from its brother towards me. I take a step back only to find no ground to support my foot. It’s too late to pull it back, fear freezes my body, not even a scream leaves my throat. One moment I’m free falling, the next I’m surrounded in the same green substance those creatures were created from. My mind goes completely numb from the shock and then….
I wake up with a thud. The only part of me left in my bed is a single leg; the rest of my body fell as it did in that nightmare…or should I say memory. Rather than getting up I simply lay on the hard, carpeted floor attempting to push my recent dream back into the dark corners of my mind. I can sense more than feel my roommates presence as she approaches my motionless form.
“Ghost? Are you alright?” Concern is thickly laden in her voice. I’m tempted to ignore her but instead remind myself where I am and who I’m with. No longer am I in a doomed future where every day the survival rate drops little by little, where the people are no longer fighting for freedom but fighting to prolong the inevitable, where it is no longer live or die but let’s die fighting. Every morning I would await the verbal reports telling me who died the previous night, who died protecting me. I mentally smack myself for allowing my mind to dwell on such thoughts, memories like this will only depress me further, the weight of my mission already lays heavily on my shoulders, more so since I have seen what will come to pass should I fail.
Out of misplaced anger I smack away my roommates hand as she offers to help me up. With a heavy sigh I move my stiff and sore body into a sitting position, holding back a cry of pain as I slightly jostle a few bruised ribs. After three weeks and some much needed rest the fractured bones have healed. I almost laugh remembering the doctors reactions to my varies wounds and battle scars. One had the nerve to comment saying it looked like I had been run over several times by Kevin Levin’s car. I told them it wasn’t far from the truth. A majority of the injuries I had sustained have become nothing more than scars and bruises, one particular one that had covered the whole left side of my torso is now just a faint discoloring of skin.
“Have they been found yet, Blossom?” I ask, a hint of an apology lingering in my voice. Reaching up to the bedpost I grab a piece of black cloth and wrap it around my eyes, careful to keep the knot free of any strands of lose hair.
Blossom hands over a pile of clothes, still disturbed by the fact that I, a blind warrior, have no real need of her assistance. Why Dexter reduced her to being my guide I haven’t the slightest clue. I have no reason for a bodyguard, at least not yet. All I truly need is someone to show me around and feed me updates as I lack the ability to read written reports. The mutated super-human has far better places to be than here. Her patience has surprised me thus far, though, as I have a tendency to snap at anyone around me.
“If all is going as scheduled they should be here in a few hours.” Blossom explained, unfazed by my spout of anger. She got up from her position by me and started to prepare herself for the coming day pulling her usual red school girl outfit from her dresser drawer. Or at least I assume its red seeing as how each of the Powerpuff girls from the moment they were born(created?) were assigned a color that has stuck with them all these years. “Also the new nano armor should be ready by the time your team arrives.”
A sudden tiny yawn draws my attention back to my bed and a slight smile graces my lips. A lump moves around under the covers, almost looking like a mouse hiding under my sheets. “Someone’s awake.” I coo, ignoring Blossom’s shock as it rolls off her body in waves. Though she has seen it several times the past few weeks since I arrived she still isn’t accustomed to it. The technology will soon --rather around six months or so-- will be available to every single one of our frontline warriors.
Nanos. A technology that has only recently been introduced to this time line. My own nano, a chibi version of our very own Nigel Uno --a.k.a. Numbuh One-- frees itself from the tangle of sheets floating in midair as it somehow ignores the laws of gravity. With a stretch and another yawn it levitates over to me where it perches itself on my shoulder. Blossom stares for another second before turning back to change her clothes. She has yet to say anything and I have yet to ask but I’m fairly sure it’s more the fact that I have a tiny Nigel perched on my shoulder that disturbs her more than anything else. I will admit, it disturbed me at first as well having a small version of one of my friends sitting on my shoulder like a parrot and treating him as one.
A few minutes later the two of us are dressed and ready to go, me in a simple pair of loose black slacks and a green colored long sleeve top. I have Blossom to thank for color coordinating my outfit. Being color blind has its draw backs. I can pick out pieces of clothing just fine but matching colored pieces is a whole different story. For all I know I could be putting on a pink shirt with yellow polka dots and lime green pants. Picking up a small hair brush I run it through the tangled mass on top my head. The wild rats nest gives way to the soft bristles and soon I can run it through my hair without it snagging. With quick and fluid movements I throw my hair up into a high ponytail.
From behind me I can sense Blossom wanting to help as she watches me but after I about bit her hand off last week she has learned that my hair is something I will not allow her to touch. It is one of the few things I can do on my own, a luxury that was not taken from me when I had my sight ripped away. I know the ponytail is sloppy and leaning more to one side of my head than the middle where I’d prefer it to be but as I stated I will not allow anyone else to touch it.
Without another word I stroll past Blossom towards the door. Nigel fidgets on my shoulder babbling on about pistachio ice cream for breakfast while the teenage super human rushes to catch up with me not even attempting to warn me when an obstacle appears in my path. I easily walk around it. I don’t know what disturbs her more, the fact that I’m blind yet can still see or the fact that she doesn’t know why I can see without my sight. Well, that’s something she won’t be finding out anytime soon, not if I can help it.
You can read this bit before or after you read the chapter, it won't spoil anything. Might clarify something for you, in fact. If you can't tell, Ghost IS physically blind, but she can in fact still see. How? Well, thats my little secret that will be relieved. I proof red best I could but I tend to have a really bad habit of missing a lot of stuff, like constantly switching between past and present tense and typing up stuff I think is awesome only to relize later its a bunch of ##. So feel free to leave any criticism. I'll continue this if anyones interested, if not then I tried. |
