It's actually somewhat different to most RPGs. I think... it's not turn-based and you auto-attack, let's say that.
The 3 Xenoblades have different battle tactics too, somewhat.
The original has visions of the future that show when an enemy is going to use a powerful attack, allowing you to make a quick decision on how to avert it. X has Overdrive which gives you a boost in power for a short while, speeding up the cooldown of Arts (which are the special attacks), allowing for combos, which increase Overdrive duration.
I have no idea about Xenoblade 2 though. Apparently it's different and I saw the first Nintendo Direct on it which touched on the battle system but I'm still confused. I'll just have to play it.
But really I play them for the huge, open worlds, the music and story.
